Getting Vines to Grow On and Around Your House with Trellises

Almost everything in your garden seems to be growing properly and to your satisfaction, with the exception of the vines and climbing plants that you are trying to cultivate.  This stubborn greenery never seems to grow quite where you want it to, and if you didn’t want it to grow on the walls of your house, it would be up to the roof by now.  There is a simple solution to this problem, though.  You need to train the vines to grow in the right direction using trellises, forcing them to grow in the manner you desire.

The first step to getting your wandering and climbing plants headed in the right direction is to decide exactly where you want them to grow.  Perhaps you want them to grow in straight lines along a patch of ground, in which case you can lay the trellises flat to the dirt and feed the vines through the basket weave design, pointing the ends in the direction that you want the vine to grow.  Or, if you have a bench or other piece of garden décor around which you want the climbing plants to begin to crawl, you can install trellises around these at an angle of your choice, pointing them toward the piece over which you want them to grow.

If you want vines to grow up the side of your house, tall and wide garden trellises are the key to success.  You can install these by actually attaching them to the side of your house and training the vines to begin climbing by again weaving through or wrapping around the design in the trellises.  Depending on how high you want your vines to crawl, you can opt for different trellis heights, from halfway up the wall to fitted trellises that reach all the way to the roof of your home.

It can be nearly impossible to get vines and other wandering plants to grow in the configuration that you would want to design, and even if you can make them grow at least partially in the right direction, they often become tangled, making them difficult to trim and organize.  By using garden trellises, you are not only training the plants to grow in a particular direction; you are keeping them neat and organized with little if any tangling, meaning no need to sort and restructure the design constantly.  If you love ivy and other vines but can’t stand the hassle they usually cause, trellises are just the thing for you.
